EUseless (and other such rubbish puns)

The School of Journalism yesterday was graced with the presence of some people from the European Commission, whose names I instantly committed to oblivion.
The purpose of their visit was to convince us all of the wonderful job they do. The irony of them trying to convince us that they’re not simply pen-pushing beaureucratic moneywasters by spending money buying 90-odd trainee journalists food and booze should’ve been obvious even to them.
They were quite clever though: the drinks were served quite early, so we were all nicely passive when they got round to doing the speech.
But it seemed the only real benefit of the EU they could come up with was the Bosman ruling. But not even that’s not an unequivocal good: we’ve now got a ludicrous situation where playing football is partly treated like any other job and partly not, eg that players aren’t allowed to speak to another potential employer without their current club’s permission.
I think the EU’s basic aims are generally a good idea - greater harmony in Europe and all that. But they really make it easy to hate them.
