The School of Journalism yesterday was graced with the presence of some people from the European Commission, whose names I instantly committed to oblivion.
The purpose of their visit was to convince us all of the wonderful job they do. The irony of them trying to convince us that they’re not simply pen-pushing beaureucratic moneywasters by […]

Between James taking a phone call at the start of the conference; James getting up and walking out, only to wander back in again ten minutes later; Jon setting his phone alarm and chucking it under someone’s chair, the alarm being a looped recording of Alan Partridge exclaiming, “I am hung like a donkey”; my […]

I’m not much of a one for aphorisms, despite having one rather permanently drawn on my arm, but that old cliche “knowledge is power” is pretty accurate.
Today we had the privilege of Kim Hollamby, the man in charge of IPC Media’s electronic delivery. One of the many, many things he told us was that their […]

I’ve been reliably informed that one of the lecturers in the journalism department, organising this press conference exercise that got me all confused the other day, described gair rhydd’s three-page coverage of the Stern Review, including my article, as among the best coverage (s)he’s read.

Though I did watch a bit of last night’s X-Factor, I can’t remember if the god-awful MacDonald brother are still in it. If they are, then it can’t possibly be on talent. There’s more chance of somebody buying Oranjeboom because they actually like it, and the best thing about Oranjeboom is you don’t have to […]

This is probably not the best thing to admit on a blog that might possibly, potentially be seen by a possible, potential future employer (Nor is it a good way to start a post - (H)e(a)d) but I’m monumentally disorganised.
That’s how last monday I found myself working from 6.30 am to just before 9pm, with […]

One of the only rules of the “blogosphere” is that we have a sort of obligation to carry on what are effectively chain letters but without the pseudo-supernatural threats of “bad luck” and bogeymen.I’ve been passed a meme from the mighty Yellow Duck. I have to name 10 things I would never do, and then […]

As I’ve mentioned, as part of the feature that forms part of the online module’s assessment, I’m writing about bloggers’ effect(s) on “proper” newspaper columnists. This is one I hadn’t expected: Boris Johnson joining in that popular internet passtime, fisking Polly Toynbee.

We’ve just had a guest lecture from Sarah Radford, a journalist on the Newbury Weekly News’s online wing, Newbury Today.
The site is updated daily, and they don’t hold back news for the newspaper. (I’m sceptical to be honest: the Guardian claimed to do the same - and it was quite big news apparently, even warranting […]

This here journalism combines two things:
a need to know everything, and
the desire to be heard, to imagine, however fleetingly, that people are actually paying attention to what I’ve been saying, positively or negatively
Naturally, I’d prefer positively.
So when this afternoon Cat found a photocopy - a photocopy! - of my piece on the Stern report, with […]
