The guest lecture from the editor of BBC Wales News Online, while interesting, wasn’t exactly earth-shatteringly illuminating. In brief, “Online: like print but with snappier copy”. I’d say “and more pictures” but that clearly doesn’t apply in a comparison to most (consumer) magazines. What was interesting was the issue of copyright of images sent in by the public. The BBC seemed to sweat about it quite a bit. This surprised me a bit given a certain newspaper’s procilivity for stealing things off the web both without permission and unattributed. I guess that’s the difference between a respectable national institution like the Beeb and a newspaper like the Mail, though I’m sure that the broadcast industry being externally regulated and the press self-regulated has something to do with it.
(I know we all make mistakes, and I’ve made at least my fair share, but I did have to have a chuckle when she stressed the importance of accuracy, given that off the top of my head I could name at least one story that still hasn’t been corrected nine months after publication.)
