The Independent’s comment pages can more often than not be duller than the proverbial dishwater. In yesterday’s edition, this piece by Matthew Norman on “the poisonous bully in the Home Office” (guess…) was delightful.
You’ll have to fork out a quid to read it, but trust me: it’s worth it.

Etymologists assert that ‘friday’ comes from the old English ‘frigedæg’, or the day of Frige, the Norse goddess of beauty.
Liars. It’s actually a mispronounciation of ‘free day’, the day on which work is effectively done for free, as the equivalent of the day’s earnings is spirited away to the Chancellor’s coffers.
